Anti Roll Bar Link

Anti-roll bar is a part of a car's suspension system. They are sometimes also called anti-sway bars. Their purpose in life is to try to keep the car's body from rolling in a sharp turn. Think about what happens to a car in a sharp turn.

Anti-roll bar links are short metal rods with joints known as 'bushings' at each end. The purpose of anti roll bar links is to connect the anti-roll bar in a car's suspension to the rest of the suspension structure. Anti-roll bars are fitted to just about any car these days. Most cars have an anti-roll bar on the front as well as the rear of the car. Anti-roll bars stabilize your car when you go through a corner. Whilst it is an important component it's often tricky to know whether you will need to replace it. Luckily there are a couple of checks that can be done to find out if it needs replacing.

Depending on the vehicle you're driving, you may have a front or a rear sway bar, or you may have both. If you suspect that a sway bar is broken, you can still drive the car, but you must use caution. The way this will affect your drive will depend on if the front or rear sway bar is broken.

The problems arise when the car is cornered hard, as it will roll much more than expected, causing serious and dangerous instability. It will, of course fail an MOT test. Damaged Anti-roll bars link rods will cause an MOT failure.

Because an Anti-roll bar link helps the car's suspension to put more pressure on loaded springs, a broken Anti roll bar link means that the car's suspension will not be able to handle corners as well or as quickly. While it is possible to drive with a broken Anti roll bar link, as a precaution do not take corners with excessive speeds.

Usually there is one anti-roll bar at the front of the car, joining the two front wheels, and a second at the back of the car, joining the two rear wheels. Since each anti-roll bar has one Anti-roll bar link at each end, there are a total of four Anti-roll bar link in a car. If you experience problems with the anti-roll bar it's normally due to worn bushes on either the bar or the links. The anti-roll bar itself normally does not break and can last a lifetime as it's simply a metal bar. The bushes, though, are made from plastic or rubber and can wear down or perish over time. Often wear to bushes can be identified by knocking or squeaking noises that occur when driving through corners. If you are faced with those noises it may be time to get these bushes replaced. Often the bushes cannot be replaced separately from the anti-roll bar or link itself as they are pressed into the actual component. In those cases, the whole anti-roll bar or links need replacing.
